High-wall heat pumps for Queenstown homes
The unit up near the ceiling that most people picture when they say heat pump. Cheapest to buy and fit, and the right answer for most Wakatipu rooms, as long as the model is rated to hold its output below zero.
A high-wall is the indoor unit mounted high on the wall, fed by an outdoor unit on the other side. It's the cheapest type to buy and to install, it heats a room quickly, and there's a model to suit almost any lounge or bedroom. What separates a good one from a disappointing one in Queenstown isn't the brand on the box. It's whether the unit is rated to hold its output below zero, whether it's sized for how cold your particular spot gets, and whether the outdoor unit can defrost and drain when there's snow against the wall.
What a high-wall costs in Queenstown, fitted
Prices are supplied and fitted: the unit, brackets, insulated pipework, the condensate drain, the electrical connection, commissioning and the tidy-up. What moves the number is how far the pipe has to run, how easy the wall and the outdoor position are to get at, and how much capacity the room needs.
A small unit for a bedroom or single room runs about $2,200 to $3,200. A mid-size unit for a standard living area is roughly $3,000 to $4,800, and a large one for a big or open-plan space $4,200 to $6,000.

Why the model matters more here than almost anywhere
Every heat pump advertises a heating output, and almost every brochure quotes it at 7 degrees. That figure tells you very little about a Queenstown morning. As the air outside drops the unit has less heat to gather, so output falls away exactly when you want it most, and a unit chosen on its 7-degree number can be well short at minus 5.
A cold-climate model is built for that: it holds close to its rated output down to roughly minus 15, and keeps running below it. Across the Wakatipu that isn't a premium upgrade, it's the baseline, and your installer will specify one as a matter of course rather than as an extra.
It also changes how the unit behaves on a frosty morning. Every heat pump has to melt the frost off its outdoor coil now and then, and while it does that it isn't heating the room. A unit designed for the cold defrosts less often and gets back to work faster, which is the difference between a house that stays warm through a still, clear July week and one that never quite catches up.
Sizing for the cold pocket you actually live in
Two houses with the same floor plan can need different units depending on where they sit. Cold air drains downhill and pools on the valley floors, so homes around Frankton, Lake Hayes and the flats below Arrowtown sit in the coldest air in the basin on a still night and usually want a size up on what the same room would take on a sunnier face at Kelvin Heights or Sunshine Bay.
The building matters as much as the address. The single-glazed timber cottages in central Queenstown and Arrowtown lose heat through the walls and windows faster than they can be refilled, so they need real capacity to hold a temperature through the evening. The newer builds at Jack's Point, Hanley's Farm, Shotover Country and Quail Rise are insulated and double glazed, and a smaller unit will hold them comfortably.
Undersizing is the common mistake here rather than oversizing. A unit running flat out at its limit never quite gets there on the coldest nights and costs more to run doing it. Where the indoor unit goes, and where the outdoor one belongs
Indoors the rule is that the unit should blow along the length of the room rather than into a doorway or at the back of a sofa. In the older cottages the usable wall is often the only one without a window, a chimney breast or a low ceiling line in the way, and a slightly awkward position that throws air down the room beats a tidier one that doesn't.
Outdoors, snow and ice decide it. The outdoor unit has to sit up off the ground on brackets or a stand, clear of where snow slides off a roof or piles against a wall, with room for air to move around it and somewhere for meltwater to drain away. An outdoor unit sitting in its own puddle will freeze into it.
Get that wrong and the symptoms look like a faulty unit: longer and more frequent defrosts, ice building on the base, and a house that's cool by morning. Get it right and the same equipment simply works. Good siting also makes the annual service possible without a ladder over a fence.
It cools too, which matters in a Central Otago summer
A high-wall is a reverse-cycle unit, so the box that heats you in July cools you in January. Queenstown summers are short but genuinely hot and dry, and a top-floor bedroom or a room with a big western window can be unbearable by late afternoon.
That makes cooling a real part of the value here rather than a bonus line on the spec sheet, particularly for holiday homes and rentals where a hot bedroom costs you a review. It's the same unit either way, so there's nothing extra to buy.
One unit in the main living area with the internal doors open carries a surprising amount of a compact house. Where you want bedrooms done as well, a multi-split runs several indoor heads off one outdoor unit, which is tidier and usually cheaper than two or three separate systems.
